RaiderWeb Policy Document and Webpage Application Form

This document describes the policies under which RaiderWeb is developed and managed. These rules and guidelines are developed and maintained by the RaiderWeb Policy Board, which is responsible for settling issues and disputes concerning the maintenance and operation of RaiderWeb.

Definitions
  1. RaiderWeb is a central repository of all types of information about Mount Union College . This information is organized as an interconnected collection of hypertext "pages" created by various individuals, departments, and organizations. The purpose of RaiderWeb is to provide easy, online access to information about Mount Union College and its people, policies, resources, and events via Web-browsing software running on a Macintosh, PC, or Unix computer. This information is accessible to the college community and to the rest of the world via the Internet.
  2. The term Mount Union Entity means any Mount Union College :

a. individual (student, faculty, administrator, and other staff);

b. academic or administrative department, committee, or task force;

c. or recognized student organization (with a faculty-approved constitution).

  1. A home page is the primary page or document for an individual or a group. It contains information about the individual or group and links to other pages.
  2. The term RaiderWeb Entity means a Mount Union Entity with (a) their own home page containing information and possibly links to other pages of information, and (b) their home page linked into an appropriate portion of RaiderWeb.

Rules and Guidelines

  1. Any Mount Union Entity may apply to become a RaiderWeb Entity. Personal homepages are automatically created via a blank page in the public.www folder on your H drive.  By using your RaiderWeb site you automatically agree to this policy.  For applications for other entities, please contact the Information Technology Helpdesk.
  2. Every RaiderWeb Entity must provide a RaiderWeb Contact Person, who is willing to respond to comments or questions concerning the information on the home page and on related documents provided by the entity. In the case of a home page for an individual, that individual will act as their own contact person. The name and email address of the contact person must appear at the bottom of the home page along with the date of the last update of the home page and/or related documents. Like this: Last update: 6/21/2006 -- Send comments to 330-829-8726, or x4357 on campus.

  3. Every RaiderWeb Entity must provide a RaiderWeb Representative, who is responsible for ensuring that the content of their home page and related documents is accurate, current, and appropriate for online access. In the case of copyrighted material, the representative is responsible for obtaining the necessary permission for posting such material. In the case of a home page for an individual, that individual will act as their own contact person and representative. In the case of a home page for a group, the RaiderWeb Representative does not have to also be either the RaiderWeb Contact Person or the person who actually creates, edits, and deletes the RaiderWeb material for the group. However, the RaiderWeb Representative does have to supervise and coordinate all such activities for the group.
  4. The home page for RaiderWeb (the Mount Union College home page) will be maintained by the RaiderWeb Policy Board. The board will appoint a RaiderWeb Contact Person for the Mount Union College home page, and the board will collectively act as the RaiderWeb Representative for this page.
  5. In the interest of free speech RaiderWeb Entities are given the freedom to create whatever they wish in their pages, and no one will edit or proofread the material before its entry into RaiderWeb. However, all RaiderWeb material must be suitable for viewing and/or reading by individuals of all ages, and conform with copyright laws. These are not limitations of free speech, but represent the policies of this institution. The Mount Union College Judicial Board is responsible for settling all issues and disputes concerning the maintenance, operation, and contents of RaiderWeb. If you find anything within RaiderWeb that is objectionable, please contact us immediately at helpdesk@muc.edu.

Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept for inclusion in RaiderWeb any material if, in the judgement of the RaiderWeb Policy Board, such inclusion would involve violation of copyright law.

What Information Should I Provide?

Any text, graphic, or audio information that is of interest to the Mount Union Community is potential material for RaiderWeb. Faculty might offer biographical information, course syllabi, and project or homework assignments. Administrative offices could provide electronic versions of handbooks, brochures, schedules of classes, calendars of important dates, and nearly anything else that has traditionally been distributed on paper. Organizations might make available general information about their group as well as calendars of meetings and events. In addition to biographical information, all individuals are free to organize specialized information about their hobbies, sports, and other interests.

How Do I Create an HTML Page?

Documents on the World Wide Web in general, and RaiderWeb in particular, are stored using a special language called Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). You may learn about this language for creating Web pages by attending seminars on campus or reading about it on the Web. It is possible to produce simple Web pages after learning only a few HTML codes. Becoming more proficient with HTML enables the creation of quite elegant pages with graphics, numbered lists, indexes and tables of contents, etc. A good starting point is to look at one of the many HTML primers on the Web and to examine the codes for existing documents.

Style Considerations

Style and organization of your pages is important in creating effective, easy to use presentations. You can learn much by browsing existing pages, noting features that seem to enhance ease of use as well as those that inhibit ease of use. It is usually wise to limit one page or document to only two or three screens worth of information. Longer documents should be split up into multiple pages linked via a table of contents or index.
