Installing a certificate in Microsoft Windows XP

1.)    First click on the following link to download the certificate. http://it.muc.edu/network/CertAuth.cer. Download this certificate to a location where you will remember it such as the desktop.  If you have difficulty right click and chose Save Target as …

2.)    Once the certificate has been downloaded open the certificate. The certificate window should look like the window below. From the window choose to install the certificate.

3.)    The next several steps are straight forward as the default settings for the Certificate are correct for our networks setup. This means you can just click next each time it comes up and when finish comes up click on it and the certificate has been successfully installed.

Now to set up your connection

1.      Ensure you are logged onto your PC using your Mount Union network ID.

2.      Double click on the My Network Places icon.  Once it has opened, this window will have a sidebar on the left with an icon for View Network Connections.  Single click on this icon to open it.

3.      Once the view network connections window has opened there should be a listing of all possible network connections.  One of them will be for wireless network connection.  Single-click on this icon to check if it is enabled or disabled.  You will find this in the details box of the sidebar.  If it is disabled right click on the icon and select enable.  Once your connection is enabled double click on the icon to open the status window.

4.      Click on the properties button within the status window.

5.      In the properties window choose the Wireless Networks tab near the top of the screen.

6.      If you are in an area of campus that is covered by a wireless router, a wireless network MUC Wireless should appear in the available networks dialog box.  Highlight it, then click the Configure button.

7.      Under the Association tab, set the Network Authentication to Open, the Data Encryption to WEP and check the box that says the key is provided for me automatically.  Also make sure that the ad-hoc network check box is not checked.  Your configuration window should look like the image below.

8.      Next move to the Authentication tab.  Make sure Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network is checked.  EAP type should be Protected EAP (PEAP).  The last two check boxes should be unchecked, see image below.

9.      Now click on the Properties button.  Make sure the Validate server certificate box is selected.  In the list of Certification Authorities scroll down to CertAuth and check it.  Ensure Enable Fast Reconnect is checked and that the authentication method is MSCHAP.  See image below.

10.  Click on the Configure button.  The following screen will open.

11.  Uncheck this box.  This tells your computer to prompt you for username and password.  Press OK on all of the windows once this is done the new settings will take effect. Afterwards, you will see something similar to the following.

12.  Clicking on this balloon, will bring up the following box into which you need to enter your username and password and the domain as shown.

13.  After clicking OK, your wireless connection should now be configured correctly.  If you are in range of the MUC wireless network it will attempt to connect you.  This may take several minutes, and the first attempt to connect may fail.  However, a window should then appear stating one or more wireless connections are available.  You will need to click on this to choose MUC Wireless.
