Environmental Print Policy

Environmental Print Policy

Approved April 2007

Implementation planned for fall 2007

The Environmental Print Policy has been established to help reduce waste and offset significant expenses associated with printing in the public labs and in the library.  The following are some anticipated benefits to Mount Union College and to the students:

Mount Union College

  • Waste Reduction - Based on the responses from other institutions who have implemented a “pay for print” campaign on their, it can be assumed that printing will be dramatically reduced. Students will learn to be more aware of what they are printing and encouraged to print only necessary information.
  • Budgeting Assistance - The addition of a pay for print program will allow those departments that are responsible for budgeting for items such as toner and paper in public areas to have a more accurate estimate of what will be used in those locations.

Students

  • Environmental Awareness – Students will receive information concerning the environmental impact of wasteful printing. As the mission statement states, “ Mount Union ’s mission is to prepare students for meaningful work, fulfilling lives, and responsible citizenship.” Becoming aware of conserving resources is a step toward preparing students to become responsible citizens.

Logistics

  1. Students will receive instruction on how to release print jobs and monitor the number of prints remaining on their print account.
  2. Each student will receive 1,000 free prints per academic year (or 12 months, including summer term?) beginning August 1s. Additional prints can be purchased for $0.05 per page.  A $50.00 deposit will be made to each student printing account.  Unused balance from printing accounts will carry over to the next academic  year.  At no time will there be any reimbursement of unused printing account balances.
  3. Students who use up their printing credit at any time during the academic year can add credit to their printing account in $5.00 (100 pages b&w) increments.   In order to purchase more printing pages, the student must complete an online form through IQWeb (neon.muc.edu).  The students will have the option to pay by credit card or have the amount billed to their student account.  If a student wishes to pay by purple plus they must visit the business office cashier window.  Money in a printing account is nonrefundable and nontransferable.  Once the request is received through IQWeb to the IT Helpdesk the credit (pages) will be added to the print account within 24 hours.
  4.  Students will be able to see how much is remaining in their printing account each time that they print.  A student will also receive an email notification when reaching a balance of $5.00.  He/She will not be able to print when print balance reaches $0.00.
  5. Student organizations will also receive 1,000 free prints per academic year beginning August 1.  Student organizations will need a network account; the Organization advisor will need to contact the helpdesk if they do not currently have a student organization network account.  The Advisor of the Student Organization will need to submit a signed printing authorization form to the business office to add credit (pages) to their printing account when necessary.
  6. Locations of Printers covered under The Environmental Print Policy include but are not limited to the following:
